base, the president expected to hop on a plane to take air force one over to newtown, connecticut to take part in a vigil tonight. he'll be meeting with first responders, he'll also be meeting with family members of some of the survivors there. as you can see president obama making his way to air force one. kristen well welker who's standing by to travel with the president. what can we expect to hear from president obama tonight? >> reporter: as you mentioned, president obama is going to start off by meeting with the folks who were most affected by this tragedy as he arrives in newtown, connecticut. he'll be speaking with family members and first responders here at newtown high school. he said his comment also focus on the victims, on the lives lost. this is becoming an all too familiar path for this president. this will be the fourth time he will have spoken to a community that is reeling in the wake of a gun massacre. just this summer, he went to a aurora, colorado in the wake of the shooting there. last year, it was tucson, arizona, in 2009, it was ft. hood, texas. too many lives

, bob king in michigan. >> thank you to josh. coming up, we are going to go back live to newtown, connecticut, for the latest on the school shooting and president obama's visit later today. >>> welcome back. i'm melissa harris-perry. this hour, we have a lot to get to including the housing rebound headlines you have been seeing as well as the renewal for the against women act. first, we want to make sure you have the latest information on newtown. president obama will visit the shaken community today. we go to chris jansing who has been in newtown since the news broke on friday. what is the latest? >> reporter: good morning to you. we are learning more about the shooter who was described by people who knew him well as a loner. we know now, for the first time that he went to sandy hook elementary school, where, of course, he opened fire killing 20 students and six adults. when he walked down the hall, he would grasp his computer, walk along the walls and rarely interacted with anyone. this is a day to remember the victims and president obama will be here later today at 7:00 easter

in newtown, connecticut. and that was not the only news story this week. one important story that was uncovered before the friday shooting. the future of women's under the violence act. it provided billions of dollars to investigate violent crimes against women but it expired. they offered to expand the bill with a new protection for same-sex couples, american indians and undocumented immigrants. so the house balked so in tuesday at a rare show of defiance in their own party leadership ten house rips signed on to a letter written by democration asking house supremer john boehner and majority leader kantor to on the reauthorization of the violence against women act bringing a bill inclusive of all those protected by violence and similar to those that loor passed to the house floor for a vote. there must be a partizan bill to protect all those vulnerable. senate republicans that vote the against it say they are willing to support it but conservatives in the house remain opposed. the bill failed to reach the floor before the current congress left town. one of the major sticking point

will travel toll newtown, connecticut, to visit with the families of the shootings. the visit comes as several new facts have emerged about the shooting over the last day. the nation is now beginning to know the faces of those who died. officials yesterday released the names and ages of awful 26 of the victims at the school. of the 20 children who were killed, all were ages 6 and 7. in addition to the name and ages of the adults killed we have more details about somtd of their actions. victoria soto, a 27-year-old teacher was killed while protecting her children. police say adam lanza shot his way into the school and the state medical examiner celts the all the children were shot for than once with a sem automatic rifle, and this was one of three weapons. he apparently took the guns from his mother, who according to reports was a gun enthusiast. we have policy analyst ezra klein and columnist david siroda and host of khow radio. and goldy taylor and m
